Lovers of the music of the Mighty Sparrow
(Dr Slinger Francisco) have embarked on a project with a difference, to celebrate
the music of the Birdie, as the King of the Calypso World is also known.
At the show, “Sparrow: A Special Someone,”
the bard himself would be invited to hear some of his fans perform his music
for him, following which he would give his own “live performance.” SWWTU Hall
on Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain, is the venue for the event, which is
scheduled to take place on the eve of the Republic Day holiday, Tuesday
September 23, starting at 8 pm.
Nigel Galt, also known as Temples, told
Newsday how the show came about.
“My brother Randall ‘Swami’ Galt, decided it
was high time that someone pay a special tribute to Sparrow (in a way this is)
other than what is the norm. He approached me with the idea and then spoke with
David Bereaux and from there the concept was born,” he said,
“The idea was for a bunch of us “amateurs”
who, apart from our love for calypso, have a great admiration and respect for
Sparrow, to come together so we came up with “Sparrow, A Special Someone” where
we would all sing a few hits (only Sparrow music) and then have him sing a few
songs at the end of the show.”
He added that after David contacted Sparrow
and received his blessing, they decided to go forward with their pla, and next
Tuesday night they expect to live their dream when the show comes off at SWWTU
Hall.
David Bereaux and friends Band will be
supplying the back-up music and Swami, Wayne “Doppy’’ Dopson, Temples, Gary “De
Dozie” Almandoz, Chris Garcia, Black Sage (Phillip Murray) and David Bereaux
will all be performing various songs from different decades with an emphasis on
real calypso, after which Sparrow will close the show.
Galt said, “Even though half of us are
amateur performers, except for Garcia, Bereaux, Black Sage and Doppy, we have
all been very successful at various amateur competitions over the years.
Wayne and I have won the QPCC (Queen’s Park
Cricket Club) calypso show on nine occasions each, Gary three times, and Swami
once.”
Galt added: “The atmosphere is for fun and
enjoyment with a lot of love and respect going out to our beloved Sparrow.”
He assured there would be drinks and food on
sale with safe parking at the rear of the SWWTU Hall for those who are
concerned about parking on the Wrightson Road stretch.
